We will be launching two very different books: Aubrey's Villa and Alchemy of the Planets, both of which have featured in recent newsletters (which you can reach via those links).
Aubrey's Villa has been a new venture for us. It is a complex text inside combined with over sixty colour images from John Aubrey's original manuscript, so - a little reluctantly - we decided to prepare the whole thing digitally and have it digitally printed. That said, the cover paper has been hand-marbled by Jemma Lewis and the book hand-bound at Ludlow Bookbinders. This is the first time Aubrey's manuscript (now in the Bodleian Library) has been published and three Aubrey scholars - Kate Bennett, Peter Davidson, and Kelsey Jackson Williams - have written essays and commentary to accompany Aubrey's watercolours and words. I've found this a fascinating project to work on.
Alchemy of the Planets is probably the most ambitious artist's book we have undertaken. With its aluminium case and presentation it makes quite an impact, and opening the case reveals more drama inside. Philip Hughes's stunning images inspired by planetary space missions and Carmen Boullosa's sometimes almost haiku-like verses need to be seen. There are thirty-two image-poem pairs for twelve planets and moons, from Mercury to Pluto via moons such as Enceladus. You have to see it! We will of course have copies of both books on display for you to handle and inspect, and copies for sale. So, if you are in the London area do come and meet us at The Artworkers' Guild. Do register at the Eventbrite website by clicking on the button below. It's free of course and there will be refreshments. You don't need to bring a ticket and don't hesitate to turn up on the night even if you haven't registered. (If London might as
well be Mars for you, our apologies for being so London-centric. For our North
American friends, on the East Coast at least, we will be exhibiting at the Oak Knoll Book Fest in New
Castle, Delaware in October - more of this in a future newsletter.) |
