The front carries a silk-screened version of the image on the title page, itself derived from one of Philip Hughes's images for the moon Enceladus which features inside.
A flap at the side lifts, allowing the front cover to be opened. An eight-page introductory section lies on the top; as well as introducing the book and its provenance it lists the sources of the images from which Philip Hughes has drawn inspiration and gives details of the construction of the book. The box is lined with hard foam that keeps the contents snugly inside. The side flap is secured with a magnetic strip.
Beneath the introductory section is the first of the twelve sections, each devoted to a planet or planetary moon. We start nearest the sun with Mercury and as we go deeper into the box we travel out through the solar system finally reaching the minor planet Pluto.
The next photograph shows one of the openings, this one from the section on Mercury, with Philip Hughes's interpretation of an image from one of the Messenger spacecraft. On the left above the grey rule we see Carmen Boullosa's response in the form of a poem in Spanish, and Psiche Hughes's translation into English beneath it. Each section is devoted to a planet or moon and comprises between two and six openings which are bound into their own zigzag, itself wrapped in a translucent paper. The whole contains thirty-two of Philip's stunning images.
You can read more about the book at our website. Copies are £1,900 each plus shipping at cost. |
